Hartanto Gunawan is from Indonesia. He was a very successful businessman, a CEO of a large international company. Like a lot of us he experienced stress, anger and impatience. Hartanto was disenchanted with corporate life and left his position. He headed to Thailand and became a Buddhist monk. For 2 years of intense training he lived on an uninhabited jungle island with almost nothing except his Buddhist scriptures. He begged for his food in order to survive. He turned to meditation as a way to deal with his fear, loneliness, regret, fear, anxieties and depression. From his experiences on the island, he began to develop his unique approach to Meditation – a technique that involves understanding the steps that your mind takes before you act or react to any situation. A simple sensory feeling or observation can lead to an impulsive action and a multitude of consequences. Understanding this allows for the cycle to be broken.
Hartanto currently directs the Community Learning Center of Buddha Dhamma Practice and International Charity at Thailand’s renowned Wat Arun temple. This organization provides vocational training courses and job placements for nursing and engineering under-privileged and needy youth who are at risk of human trafficking, domestic abuse/violence and drugs. It has been successful in helping orphans, poor and disadvantaged youth and children from human trafficking while providing quality education that opens their minds to morality and discipline. The center also assists its students in finding proper and honorable employment. It provides scholarships, trains children and youth to be good citizens in society, promotes Thai culture and tradition, and teaches meditation. The Center is also helping mankind to cope and manage their healthy mental health while curing and healing mental illnesses and suffering.
